The Real Sociedad 1980/81 shirt carries the number 10 of Jesús Mari Zamora, and with it one of the most dramatic finishes in the history of Spanish football. Blue and white stripes, the royal crest and a goal that came so late that half of Spain could hardly believe it.
This is the story of how a club from San Sebastián, playing only with Basque footballers, beat Real Madrid to its first ever league title.
A team from the Basque Country
At the end of the 1970s Real Sociedad played only with Basque players, and coach Alberto Ormaetxea built a side full of local talent. In goal stood Luis Arconada, one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. In midfield was Periko Alonso, father of a later Real Sociedad and Spain star, Xabi Alonso. Up front, Jesús Mari Satrústegui and Roberto López Ufarte gave the team goals and pace, while Zamora linked everything together.
In 1979/80 this team went on a record unbeaten run that lasted more than a year. Even so, they finished second behind Real Madrid. Many clubs would have collapsed after such a blow. Real Sociedad came back stronger.

The last day in Gijón
Going into the final day of the 1980/81 season, Real Sociedad and Real Madrid were fighting for the title. Real Sociedad played away at Sporting Gijón, while Madrid faced Valladolid at home.
Madrid did their job and won 3–1. In Gijón, Real Sociedad were losing 2–1 as the minutes ran out. The title was slipping away. Then, at the very end of the match, Zamora found the equaliser. The game finished 2–2, Real Sociedad and Madrid finished level on points, and the head-to-head record gave the title to the Basques.
Satrústegui finished the season as the team’s top scorer with 16 league goals, but the goal everyone remembers is Zamora’s.

The design: the txuri-urdin stripes
Real Sociedad’s colours are known locally as txuri-urdin, white and blue in Basque. The Real Sociedad 1980/81 shirt shows them at their cleanest: bold vertical stripes, the crowned crest on the chest and no sponsor. On the back, Zamora’s number 10.
It is a shirt that looks just as good today as it did at the old Atocha stadium, where La Real played until 1993.

Proving it was no accident
Some champions are remembered as one-season wonders. This team was not. Real Sociedad won the league again in 1981/82, making it two titles in two seasons. Arconada, Alonso, Zamora, Satrústegui and López Ufarte are still spoken about in San Sebastián as the greatest generation in the club’s history.
The club kept its Basque-only approach for most of the decade. Only in 1989 did it break with that tradition, signing Liverpool striker John Aldridge.
Wearing it today
Vertical blue and white stripes never go out of fashion, and this shirt looks just as good in a bar in San Sebastián as it does at a five-a-side game in London. Pair it with plain navy or black so the stripes do the talking.
The version in our shop carries Zamora’s number 10 on the back, the perfect tribute to the man who scored the most important goal in the club’s history. If you prefer, you can also personalise it with your own name and number.
