The Gladbach 1975/76 shirt is the shirt of a team that made a whole generation fall in love with German football. White, black on the shoulders, the diamond crest on the chest and nothing else. No sponsor, no fuss. Just the kit of die Fohlen, the Foals, at the peak of their powers.
This is the story of the team that wore it, the night they conquered Europe, and the season they proved it was no accident.
The Foals: a team built on youth
When Hennes Weisweiler took Borussia Mönchengladbach into the Bundesliga in 1965, he did it with a squad of fearless young players. The press compared them to young horses running wild, and the name stuck. Gladbach played fast, attacking football that looked completely different from the cautious style of many rivals.
The Foals won their first Bundesliga titles in 1970 and 1971, and their rivalry with Bayern Munich defined German football in the 1970s. Bayern had Beckenbauer, Müller and Maier. Gladbach had Berti Vogts, Jupp Heynckes, Rainer Bonhof and the brilliant Danish forward Allan Simonsen.

21 May 1975: five goals in Enschede
In spring 1975 Gladbach reached the UEFA Cup final against FC Twente. The first leg in Düsseldorf ended 0–0, and many expected a nervous second leg in the Netherlands. Instead, the Foals ran riot.
Simonsen scored early, Heynckes, who had missed the first leg through injury, scored a hat-trick, and Simonsen added a penalty late on. Gladbach won 5–1, still one of the biggest winning margins ever seen in a UEFA Cup final. Captain Berti Vogts lifted the trophy in front of thousands of travelling fans. It was Weisweiler’s farewell: that summer he left for Barcelona.

1975/76: champions again under Udo Lattek
Replacing Weisweiler was not easy, but Gladbach found the right man in Udo Lattek, who had already won three titles and the European Cup with Bayern. His approach was more pragmatic, and it worked. Gladbach won the 1975/76 Bundesliga, their second title in a row and fourth in total, finishing on 45 points.
That season also produced one of the most painful nights in the club’s history. In the European Cup quarter-final against Real Madrid, Gladbach drew 2–2 at home and 1–1 in Madrid. With the score at 1–1 in Spain, they had two goals disallowed, and Real went through on away goals. Fans still believe that was the year the Foals should have won the European Cup.

The design: pure 1970s
The Gladbach 1975/76 shirt is a lesson in simplicity. A crisp white body, black panels running over the shoulders, a round collar and the club’s diamond crest. There is no sponsor logo on this version, which makes it feel even more like a piece of football history.
It is the kind of shirt that works with jeans as well as on a five-a-side pitch, and the clean lines look surprisingly modern today.
The legacy of the Foals
Gladbach won the league again in 1976/77, making it three titles in a row, and reached the 1977 European Cup final in Rome, where they lost to Liverpool. Allan Simonsen won the Ballon d’Or in 1977. Berti Vogts became a world champion and later coached Germany to the Euro 1996 title. Jupp Heynckes went on to win the Champions League as a coach with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Wearing it today
Because the design is so clean, this shirt is one of the easiest retro kits to wear away from the stadium. It works with dark jeans and white trainers, under an open jacket in autumn, or on its own on a summer evening. The white body and black shoulders also make it a great choice for a team photo at your weekend game.
If you want to make it personal, add your own name and number, or the name of the Foal you admire most. Our shirts are made to order, so every one is printed for you and nobody else.

Why fans still choose the Gladbach 1975/76 shirt
For older fans, this shirt brings back the Bökelberg, Saturday afternoons on the radio and a team that played with joy. For younger fans, it is a way to wear a part of the club’s golden age. Either way, the Gladbach 1975/76 shirt is one of the most respected retro kits in German football.
