The Manchester United Treble shirt is the home kit of the greatest season in the club’s history. In 1998/99 Sir Alex Ferguson’s team won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League, something no English club had done before.
Red with a white collar, black trim, the Umbro logo and the Sharp sponsor across the chest. For millions of fans around the world, this is simply the Manchester United shirt.
A squad built to win everything
The 1998/99 squad had everything. Peter Schmeichel in goal. Jaap Stam, Gary Neville and Denis Irwin at the back. Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs in midfield. Up front, Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole formed one of the most famous partnerships English football has seen, with Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjær waiting on the bench.
The season was a marathon on three fronts, and United only secured all three trophies in the last eleven days of May 1999.
Villa Park and Turin: the nights that made the Treble
In April 1999, United met Arsenal in an FA Cup semi-final replay at Villa Park. Keane was sent off, and in stoppage time Schmeichel saved a Dennis Bergkamp penalty. In extra time Giggs picked up the ball in his own half, ran through the Arsenal defence and smashed it into the roof of the net. It is still one of the most replayed goals in FA Cup history.
A week later United were 2–0 down to Juventus in the Champions League semi-final in Turin. Keane headed the first goal back, and even after a yellow card ruled him out of the final, he kept driving the team forward. Yorke and Cole completed a 3–2 comeback. Keane’s performance that night is still described as one of the greatest by a captain.

Eleven days in May 1999
On 16 May, United beat Tottenham 2–1 at Old Trafford to win the Premier League. On 22 May, they beat Newcastle 2–0 at Wembley in the FA Cup final, with goals from Sheringham and Scholes.

Then came Barcelona. In the Champions League final at the Camp Nou on 26 May, Bayern Munich led 1–0 from an early Mario Basler free kick, and the clock had reached stoppage time. Sheringham equalised. Moments later, from another corner, Solskjær stuck out a boot and turned the ball in. Two goals in added time, a European Cup won in the most dramatic way imaginable, and Ferguson’s famous words afterwards: “Football, bloody hell.”
With Keane suspended, Schmeichel captained the team in what was his last game for the club. A few weeks later, Ferguson was knighted.

The design: Umbro, Sharp and that collar
The Manchester United Treble shirt is classic late-1990s Umbro: a deep red body, a white collar, black detailing on the shoulders and the Sharp logo across the chest. It is clean, confident and instantly recognisable.

Make it yours: names and numbers from 1999
Part of the fun of the Treble shirt is choosing the name on the back. Beckham 7, Keane 16, Giggs 11, Scholes 18, Yorke 19, Cole 9, Sheringham 10 and Solskjær 20 are all classics from that season, and Schmeichel 1 is a favourite for goalkeepers. You can also add your own name and number and become part of the squad yourself.
Every shirt is printed to order, so whichever name you choose, it is made just for you.

Why the Manchester United Treble shirt is still so loved
Some shirts remind fans of a goal. The Manchester United Treble shirt reminds them of an entire season, a season in which the team never knew when it was beaten. It is worn at Old Trafford, in pubs around the world and at five-a-side games by people who were not even born in 1999.
